Everything you need to know about organic tampons

What are organic tampons, and are they worth the extra cash?
Regular tampons

Regular tampons are made of cotton and rayon. Cotton is usually grown using pesticides and rayon is bleached, which may create chemicals called dioxins. Tampons may contain traces of these pesticides and/or chemicals – but it’s not just chemicals we’re talking about: some regular tampons are also scented.

Okay, so what?

Well, your vagina absorbs whatever you put up there. So if regular tampons have chemicals or perfume on them, they may be absorbed into your body. As vaginas are sensitive things, these chemicals and perfumes may lead to itching or burning sensations in your vagina.

Should I panic?

That all sounds kinda scary, but don’t freak out. Regular tampons are seen as safe. We are exposed to chemicals in our everyday life, from food to household products. This means it’s hard to know exactly how much regular tampons are having an impact on our body. But if you do experience vaginal irritation, you may want to consider using organic tampons.

Organic tampons

So, how are organic tampons different? Well, they are made from organic cotton that does not contain pesticides or chemicals. This means you’re unlikely to experience vaginal irritation from using them. And they’re also better for the environment because they don’t use chemicals, fragrances, or dyes.

Issues

But before you consider switching from regular to organic, here’s some things you may want to consider.

🌱 They’re pretty expensive. Most brands are £6-£8 for a box of 18 tampons. Regular tampons are normally half this price.

🌱 There are other options that have similar benefits for less money, such as menstrual cups.

🌱 It may just be another health trend. It’s expensive and sounds good, but may not be worth all the fuss.

Where to buy

If you are totally convinced to make the switch, here are some great options. Yoppie, Flo and Freda are just a few brands in the UK. They all offer personalised services where you can mix and match tampon sizes, or even try out their day pads or pantyliners. AND they deliver to your door every month (or however often you need them), making your period stress-free.

If that doesn’t convince you, most of these brands give back to incredible causes, from educating girls to ensuring everyone has access to sanitary products.

Ultimately, it is your choice whether you stick with regular tampons, switch to organic, or even try something new like a menstrual cup. All bodies and periods are unique, so choose whatever feels good for you.
