Podcast: A gender journey of figuring out your identity

Our committee of trans+ young people share their experiences of figuring out their gender identity in this podcast episode

Figuring out any part of our identity can feel tricky, but it’s bound to feel especially challenging and uncertain in a culture of transphobia, with very little trans+-inclusive education and support. Sharing our experiences with each other can lessen the feelings of uncertainty and isolation. Listen to our trans+ committee share personal experiences of figuring out their gender identity in this podcast episode.

We asked our committee of trans+ young people these questions about figuring out their gender identity:

💗 When did you first start to think you were trans+?

💗 Do you have a memorable moment where you first started to understand more about your identity?

💗 What did figuring out your identity look like for you?

💗 What was that journey like, to understand yourself more?

💗 Did you have any support from friends, family or online?

💗 What would you say to your younger self, about figuring out your transness?

Listen to this audio content to hear our committee’s varied experiences. We hope this makes you feel less alone, especially if you’re currently figuring out your own gender journey:

“What would you say to your younger self, about figuring out your transness?

I think the first thing would be: relax. It’s okay. You’re allowed to be stressed and anxious about it, but ultimately this is a happy, good, cool, amazing thing, where you’re going to discover yourself. Get to know yourself more than you ever have. Find people who love you, find your chosen family, and find people you feel really comfortable with and trust.”

We use the term trans+ in our articles as an umbrella term intended to incorporate all transgender, non-binary, agender and genderfluid identities.

Some of the content addresses potentially triggering topics, such as transphobia and gender dysphoria. We’ve added specific content warnings to these pieces, but please take a moment to check in with yourself and how you’re feeling before diving into the series.
