We need more education on sex and disability

Of course people with disabilities are having sex, so where is the relationships and sex education about it?

Unfortunately, many young people with a learning disability do not receive a decent sex education due to stigma in society. 80% of professionals who deliver sex education to young people with a learning disability had issues finding accessible resources. That’s shocking.

Disabled people have sex. They also masturbate. And people with disabilities also have the right to receive sex education that represents their experiences. Of course they do!

Figuring out sex, relationships, sexuality and our desires is a daunting process. So having representative and non-judgemental resources about sex is so important. We need sex and relationships education so that we can protect and empower ourselves — and this goes for everyone.

Although there isn’t tons of high quality sex ed for people with disabilities, one great place to start is this brilliant video made by Brook in partnership with IPPF and Enhance the UK. In this wonderful video, two young disabled people discuss sex and disability.
